The Place

Bali's spiritual and wellness capital

Ubud sits 600 metres above sea level in Bali's central highlands. Cooler, greener, more contemplative than the coast. The air smells of frangipani and incense. Every morning begins with temple offerings: palm-leaf canang sari set at doorways, water sprinkled in blessing.

A morning at Sayan

The Sayan ridge — 15 minutes west of central Ubud — is where Bali's most architecturally significant villas hide. Properties here perch on the edge of the Ayung River gorge, overlooking a 100-metre drop into thick rainforest. This is where architects like John Hardy and Andra Matin have built their masterpieces.

Start with a swim in your infinity pool that appears to pour off the cliff. Mist rises from the valley. Hornbills glide below you. Breakfast — fresh papaya, rambutan, warm banana pancakes, strong Balinese coffee — arrives at 8.

Tegallalang rice terraces

Tegallalang and the rice terraces

A 20-minute drive north of Ubud takes you into the green cathedral of Tegallalang rice terraces. UNESCO-listed as part of the Jatiluwih cultural landscape, these 1,000-year-old terraces cascade down volcanic slopes, flooded with water mirrors at dawn.

Arrive at 6am for the light. Walk the Campuhan Ridge or Tegallalang trail. By 9am the tour buses arrive — we'll have you back at your villa by then, lounging by the pool with a cold coconut.

Dining: Locavore, Mozaic, and beyond

Ubud punches far above its weight gastronomically. Locavore holds a spot in Asia's 50 Best Restaurants year after year — a tasting menu of radically local Indonesian ingredients. Mozaic pioneered the French-Balinese movement. Hujan Locale and Moksa push plant-based cuisine to fine-dining levels.

For breakfast: Clear Café for superfood bowls, Sari Organik for a 20-minute walk through rice fields to eat at a working farm. Our concierge handles all reservations — most of these book out 2–4 weeks in advance.

Ubud yoga

Yoga, spa, and the slow reset

This is the world capital of the "wellness reset." The Yoga Barn runs 15 classes daily (Vinyasa, Yin, Kundalini, Sound Healing). Radiantly Alive draws serious practitioners. COMO Shambhala does the best high-end spa treatments on the island.

Most of our Ubud villas offer in-villa yoga at your chosen time, a 90-minute Balinese massage at your pool-side bale, and meditation sessions with sound bowls. Just ask your concierge.

Answers

Frequently asked

Is Ubud good for first-time visitors?

Yes, but we recommend pairing it with a beach destination. Typical itinerary: 3 nights in Ubud for culture and wellness, then 4 nights in Seminyak, Uluwatu, or Canggu for beach time. Ubud alone can feel intense; a split stay gives you contrast.

Where are the quietest Ubud villas?

Sayan, Payangan, and Tegallalang areas offer the most serene stays. Villas in central Ubud near Monkey Forest Road can catch traffic noise until 10pm. For truly silent nights with jungle soundscape only, stay 5–10 minutes out of town.

How far is Ubud from the airport?

60–90 minutes from Ngurah Rai International Airport, traffic dependent. We include complimentary airport transfer for stays of 5 nights or more at most premium villas.

Can you arrange a yoga retreat?

Absolutely. We curate bespoke wellness retreats with private instructors, plant-based menus, sound healing, and spa therapists — all delivered to your villa. 3-night retreats from USD 1,200 per person (excluding accommodation).

Is Ubud family-friendly?

With older children (8+), yes — they'll love the rice terraces, Monkey Forest, and batik workshops. With toddlers, the jungle ravines at some Sayan villas can feel steep. Ask us for specifically child-friendly villas with enclosed pool areas.

What's the weather like?

Ubud is 4–6°C cooler than the coast year-round. Expect 24°C mornings, 28°C afternoons, 22°C evenings. Dry season (April–October) is ideal; wet season has daily afternoon showers but lush green everything.
